Health CareMost of us only think about health care when we get sick and need a doctor, but this is a little like closing the barn door after the horse is out, so it really isn’t good stewardship of what God gave us. If we go to the trouble of eating well and exercising, then it only makes sense to also practice prevention by seeing our health care provider regularly for physicals – the older we are, the more frequently we should do this – and get all the screenings, tests, and vaccines such as flu shots, that are recommended for our sex and age. Then do what your doctor suggests as a result of the tests. Practicing prevention not only cuts down on your personal health care costs, but it helps to reduce the total costs for health care for everyone else as well. Treating an illness, particularly serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer is far more expensive than the cost of preventative care. It is the loving thing to do for yourself … and everyone else. It’s a Christian thing to do. Check out these sites: The Pocket Guide for Good Health for Adults - a short, but comprehensive guide to lifestyle changes and health care for adults, produced by the Federal Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research. Preventive Services for Healthy Living – a guide written by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Staying a Healthy Vegan – created by Vegan Outreach to help vegans be aware of nutritional issues, focusing on recommended daily intakes of important nutrients.
