Why are Health, Wellness, and Eating Well
a Part of Christian
Simple Living?
Because it’s a basic part of our faith practice:
-
God cares about our health, our community’s health, and the health of the His planet. Applying the principles of Christian simple living to
our diets and habits automatically improves our health by eliminating bad
eating and living habits in much the same way as the Old Testament dietary laws
helped our Jewish ancestors.
-
It is about loving those around us. Failing to keep our bodies healthy puts a significant drain on everyone else by increasing the
number, duration, and seriousness of our illnesses, which other
people have to pay for, either through higher insurance and medical payments or
through higher taxes to pay for Medicaid, Medicare, and the Children's Health Insurance Program and other
safety-net programs. When we keep ourselves in good health we need fewer
prescription drugs, doctor and hospital visits, and have less lost time due to
illness. By making the effort to stay healthy we don’t become a drain on
society by contributing to dramatically rising health care costs, or the huge
social disparities in health care that exist due to our over-use of the health
care system.
-
Being good stewards of God’s world. Eating healthy foods is much better for the environment – what is good for us to eat, happily also turns out to be good for
the planet!
-
and, THE BIG ADDED BONUS: living this way will make you feel and look better than you ever have
before. You will:
-
be mentally sharper,
-
look younger;
-
be more productive far longer,
-
become what God made you to be,
-
and you will like yourself a lot more. It's hard to love others when you don't really love yourself!
Here is another issue where the dials and gauges on our modern
dashboards are indicating the same disastrous trends often predicted in the Bible: Our self-interest is not in our best interest - the science and our faith agree.
Research over the past couple of decades has shown that our
consumer lifestyle has had a major negative impact on our health. Just as our
desire for more and more stuff has resulted in environmental devastation, it
has also caused us to eat lots of food that have made us fat, and has caused cancer,
heart disease, diabetes, and a host of other ills – not to mention becoming
physically quite lazy and badly out-of-shape. Our lifestyle is just as
devastating to our health as it is to the environment – it’s killing us!
Simple is better –
less is more.
